Tree Pros / Stump Grinding & Removal

Finish the space the tree leaves behind.

The tree may be gone, but its stump can still interrupt a lawn, narrow a path or stand in the way of new planting. Stump work should be planned around access, underground services and what you want to do with the space next.

Grinding and complete removal are different

Stump grinding reduces the remaining wood in the agreed area. It does not mean every root extending across the property will be removed. The depth, reach and practical limits depend on the stump and its surroundings. If a construction or planting plan requires more extensive root removal, that requirement should be discussed before a method is selected.

A stump in an open lawn differs from one beside a walkway, driveway edge or fence. Nearby paving, stone, metal and restricted access can affect feasibility. Gate openings and the route across the grounds should be reviewed, along with slopes or soft areas that may limit access.

Know what is beneath the ground

Underground utilities must be considered before ground-disturbing work. Appropriate utility-location arrangements are part of planning; the presence of a stump is not evidence that the ground around it is clear. Explain known irrigation, landscape lighting, gate wiring, drainage and other private installations as well.

Do not assume that old property plans or the apparent route of a pipe establish its current location. The contractor responsible for excavation must arrange the applicable utility notification and checks. Private systems may require separate identification. Work should be planned around those findings rather than asking the owner to uncover services.

Decide how the area will be left

Grinding produces a mixture of wood material and soil. Agree whether that material stays in place, is moved to an agreed part of the grounds or is removed. Backfilling, topsoil, lawn repair and new landscaping should be discussed separately; they are not automatically included in stump grinding.

For a property moving into its next landscaping phase, explain the intended finish before the job is quoted. A future lawn, planting bed and paved surface may need different preparation. Stump work can be considered after a recent tree removal or for an older stump, subject to access and site conditions. Tree Pros does not guarantee complete removal of every root or immediate readiness for every future use.
